Personal and Medical Background
Dr McMahon (at left) with Dr Kerin
Dr. McMahon established Treaty Medical Centre in 2011 with Dr Emmet Kerin and has since become an adjunct senior clinical lecturer in the Graduate Entry Medical School of the University of Limerick.
He is the largest provider of non-scalpel vasectomies in the Mid-West and is an active member of the Primary Care Surgical Association and the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care (UK).
He has obtained postgraduate diplomas in Dermatology, Practice Management and Obstetrics/Gynaecology.
Dr. McMahon met his Australian wife in the Royal College of Surgeons and they married in 2004. She also works in General Practice in the Mid West and they have three daughters.
Dr. McMahon loves rugby, road running and gardening.
Dr. McMahon has always had an interest in surgical procedures throughout his training and having completed the diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology started working in the Family Planning Clinic in Limerick where he observed the provision of traditional scalpel vasectomies.
He then went to train in Colchester UK and obtained a certificate to provide Non Scalpel Vasectomies under the tutelage of Dr Laurel Spooner of the Association of Surgeons in Primary Care in 2014. Since then, he has provided this service to many thousands of men in the Mid West.
Much like vasectomies, circumcision is a procedure well suited to being provided in the community. However, unlike vasectomy, has only been provided in hospitals in Ireland under general anaesthetic. There are waiting lists of up to 3 years in Ireland to get this procedure done and it can also be costly, so there was clearly an opportunity to take some of the workload away from hospitals while helping to alleviate waiting lists.
When Dr. McMahon was approached by Dr. Neil Pollock and offered the opportunity to train and provide this service, he grasped the opportunity with both hands.
